Mahjong is a quiet tile-matching puzzle. Tiles are stacked in layers, and you clear the board by matching pairs of identical tiles, two at a time. The catch is that only free tiles can be picked, so the order you clear them in is the whole game.

This is mahjong solitaire, the one-player matching game, not the four-player game with hands and melds.

Where to find it

How to play

  • Match pairs. Tap a tile, then tap an identical one. Both clear. Clear every tile to win.
  • Only free tiles can be matched. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open. Tiles you cannot pick yet are slightly dimmed (you can turn the dimming off under the board).
  • Wild pairs. Any Season matches any other Season, and any Bloom matches any other Bloom.
  • Every board can be won. Each board is dealt with at least one full solution, so a lost game is never the deal's fault.
  • Hint lights up a pair you can take. Undo takes back your last match. Both are free and unlimited.
  • Shuffle re-deals the tiles that are left onto the same spots, and the new layout can still be won. The first 2 shuffles in a game are free; each one after that adds 30 seconds to your time. If you run out of open pairs, the game offers a shuffle for you.

The tiles

  • Three suits, numbered 1 to 9: Paws (paw prints), Bones and Crowns (a big number under a gold crown). Every suit tile also has its number in the corner.
  • Seven pet honors: Purrpink, Barkwood, Frostyserpent, Bluppy, Flamey, Aquabun and Orangetail.
  • Four Seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) with a blue frame, and four Blooms (Tulip, Sunflower, Lotus, Bluebell) with a pink frame. These are the wild pairs.
  • The Turtle uses every tile. The smaller boards use a random selection, always in matching sets.

Boards and payouts

Turtle144Hard600 MPCup to 100, gone by 15 minutes60
  • The Pond is sized for a phone held upright. The Pagoda and the classic Turtle are wide boards: turn your phone sideways and the board fills the screen.
  • A game you forfeit pays 10 MPC plus 2 MPC for every pair you matched (up to 152 MPC on the Turtle), and 10 pet XP.
  • Coin boosts and your active pet's happiness are applied on top.
  • Every game is replayed match-for-match on the server.

Zoom and full screen

  • Pinch the board, or use the + and − buttons, to zoom in. Drag to look around, and use the corner button to fit the whole board again.
  • The full-screen button in the top corner gives the board the whole screen. On a phone, turning sideways during a Pagoda or Turtle game switches to full screen by itself.

Plays and resuming

  • You get 3 games a day, reset at midnight MPT. VIP members get 2 extra.
  • A game counts the moment you start it. Leave whenever you like: the same board is waiting the next time you open the page, on any device, with the clock still running.

Trophy

Mahjong's all-time record in The Trophy Case is the fastest Turtle win; a lower time takes The Jade Turtle. Shuffle penalties count toward that time. Pond and Pagoda wins are recorded on your own page but do not compete for the trophy.

Pet Intelligence

Finishing a game earns your active pet +1 Intelligence, or +2 for a win. A quick forfeit does not count; play at least three minutes and fifteen pairs. Mahjong is also one of the puzzle games where a clever pet adds a coin bonus. See Pet Intelligence.

Good habits

  1. Free the long rows first. Tiles at the ends of the longest rows are blocking the most.
  2. Uncover stacked tiles early. A tile buried under the top layers can only come out once everything above it is gone.
  3. When three of a kind are free, think before you pick. Take the pair that opens up more of the board, and keep the third for later.
  4. Don't spend all four of a tile on one side. If both copies of a pair sit under the same stack, you may need the other two to dig them out.
  5. Start on the Pond. It is quick, and it teaches the rhythm before the Turtle.
