Mahjong Arrives: Match the Tiles, Clear the Board

Clear some space on the table: the Games Center has a brand-new tile game today, and it sits right next to Solitaire and Spider Solitaire.

Mahjong is the quiet tile-matching puzzle. The tiles are stacked in layers, and you clear them two at a time by matching identical pairs. The catch is that only free tiles can be picked: nothing on top, and an open left or right side. So the whole game is choosing which pair to take first.

There are three boards to choose from. The Pond is 72 tiles and fits a phone held upright. The Pagoda stacks 108 tiles, and the classic Turtle uses all 144. Wins pay 250, 400 or 600 MPC by board, with a speed bonus on top. Even a forfeit pays 2 MPC for every pair you matched. You get three games a day (VIP members get five), and every game earns your active pet XP and Intelligence.

Tiles with a MiroPets twist

The suits are Paws, Bones and Crowns, numbered 1 to 9. Seven pet honors show familiar faces like Purrpink, Barkwood and Orangetail. Four Seasons and four Blooms are wild pairs, so any Season matches any other Season.

Every board is dealt with at least one full solution, so a game is always winnable. If you run out of open pairs, Shuffle re-deals the tiles that are left, and they can still be cleared. Hint and Undo are free.

The big boards are made for a sideways phone. Turn it and the board fills the screen, then pinch to zoom in on the tiles. On a computer, the full-screen button does the same.
